AAHA Member

Animal Hospital South is proud to be an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Our accreditation demonstrates our commitment to the highest standards of veterinary care. AAHA regularly inspects our hospital to ensure that we comply with the association's standards for facilities, equipment, and quality procedures. AAHA standards are recognized around the world as the benchmark for quality care in veterinary medicine. Approximately 12 percent of animal hospitals in the United States are accredited by AAHA.

We are located at 1304 Hendersonville Road, Asheville NC 28803. Click HERE for a map of our location. You can find us most easily off of exit 50 from I-40, going south on Hendersonville Road. We're less than three miles down the road on the left. We're also less than a mile from where the Blue Ride Parkway intersects Hendersonville Road.

Our Staff

Our staff for both hospitals is listed here, as each employee is capable of working both our East and South locations. All of our staff members are technically trained in order to facilitate a patient's care in a careful and expedient manner. Both hospitals and their staff members have contributed generously to the Asheville Humane Society's recent education and adoption center as well as to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, the latter of which is responsible for providing aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina as well as other rescue organizations locally and statewide.

Veterinarians

Dr. Tom B. Kuhn, BS, DVM

Dr. Tom Kuhn grew up as part of a military family and lived in the southeastern and western parts of America during his youth. His father is a veterinarian who graduated from the University of Washington, receiving his DVM degree from Washington State University as well as a Masters of Public Health from UC Berkeley. The family influence was a spark for Dr. Kuhn to pursue his veterinary medical studies. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and graduated from the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine with high honors. Dr. Kuhn is married to Dr. Margaret Kuhn and they have three children. The family is active in church and school related activities. In his daily clinical practice Dr. Kuhn has a special interest and advanced training in ultrasonography, knee surgery, dentistry, and pain management. Outside of practice his interests are water sports, reading, hiking and of course, Clover, his canine companion. Pictured with him is Tank, the Animal Hospital East community kitty. Tank tries to be good most of the time.

Dr. Margaret A. Kuhn, BS, DVM, MA

Dr. Margaret Kuhn is the other half of the Drs. Kuhn team. She also graduated with honors from the University of Georgia. Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Margaret Kuhn completed her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech with a degree in biochemistry. Dr. Margaret Kuhn has raised three children and maintained expertise in small animal surgery. She is also involved in the management of both of her hospitals. Margaret is an accomplished ballet dancer and holds a Master's degree from Duke University. While at Duke, she completed extensive coursework in animal ethics and wrote her thesis on the animal-human relationship. Interestingly, Dr. Margaret Kuhn is a sixth generation resident of western North Carolina with roots in Hot Springs, Waynesville, Black Mountain, and right here in Asheville. Both of her parents are graduates of UNC Chapel Hill. Margaret and her son Peter are devoted pet lovers and are especially devoted to our house cat Tuck, pictured here. Tuck is so lucky.

Dr. Jay Kidney, BS, DVM, MS

Dr. Jay Kidney grew up in Connecticut and completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College. After graduation he was commissioned in the Navy and became a member of the Navy Seals. After his naval service he received his veterinary degree from Cornell University. He was the recipient of the highest award in small animal medicine from Cornell having graduated number one in his class. After several years of veterinary practice he completed a Master’s degree in Toxicology from the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. Dr. Kidney is a published author in several journals and has served as an academic lecturer as well. His personal goals in practice are to be a strong advocate for the patient and a compassionate advisor to the patient’s owner. He and his wife Susan, as well as Pogo, Annie, and Molly (pictured here) live in Fairview. Sweet Pea (a large donkey), three nubian goats, four Tennesee fainting goats plus various chickens round out the Kidney’s farm animals.

Dr. Josh von Szalatnay, BS, DVM

Dr. Josh von Szalatnay received his undergraduate degree in biology from the College of Charleston with high honors, followed by a veterinary degree from the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. von Szalatnay has devoted much of his time and expertise to the welfare of homeless animals as well as extensive participation with Remote Area Medical, an organization devoted to rural medical and veterinary care. Dr. von Szalatnay has a unique interest in international veterinary medicine evidenced by his participation in externships in Germany, Mexico, and Brazil. He speaks many languages and, according to him, some are spoken better than others! He is an avid kayaker and spends much of his free time on the local creeks and rivers. He is the recipient of the prestigious Global Citizen Award given by the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. He is pictured here with Sensi MacEachern, a visiting friend!

Dr. Craig Hill, BS, DVM

Dr. Hill received his Bachelor of Science in microbiology from Colorado State University completing his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree there as well. Although he received his education in the west, he grew up on the east coast in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has a strong interest and advanced training in internal medicine as well as exotic medicine. He has also completed studies in animal welfare. Outside of his profession, he enjoys outdoor activities, soccer, and travel with his lovely wife Amy. Together they share their household with Tessa (pictured here), Ruby Jean, and Milosca and Jack, their cats.

Nursing Care

Traci

Traci has been working with our patients in the accomodation section of the hospital for over ten years now and is a pleasure for all of us to work with. She has a good working knowledge of all the hospital departments and you may occasionally be greeted by Traci when you phone in. Traci is a North Carolina native who enjoys reading, fishing, and hiking. She shares her home with 2 cats and Spot (pictured). Spot looks like a dog from the movies!

Catherine

Catherine is a native of Swannanoa. She shares her home with six cats. She enjoys spending time with them, as well as watching movies, drawing, dancing, and reading. Because of her love for animals, she is furthering her education at the Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College veterinary technology program. She is careful and meticulous with her patient care. She is pictured here with Bell.

Elinor

Elinor is currently attending Asheville Buncome Technical Community College; aspiring to become a wildlife veterinarian. She spends weekends hiking with her canine companions and volunteering at Animal Haven of Asheville. She is pictured here with Peanuts, Walnut (bulldog), and Indigo (the large one).

Technicians

Vickie, Chief Nurse

Vickie has been with Animal Hospital East and Animal Hospital South immediately following her graduation from UNC Asheville. Vickie holds a BA in Biology and she received every scholastic honor given through the university. She enjoys the fast pace of our hospitals and is a master of organization. You can count on Vickie to know what is on the agenda and the status of all our hospitalized patients. If you have a question she is pleased to be of assistance. She is pictured here with Fanny.

Lori A.

Lori grew up in Hickory, NC and enjoyed her time at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte while working on a BA in biology and a minor in anthropology. During college she worked at an emergency veterinary hospital, as well as at a raptor rehabilitation facility, and participated in several fun class trips to the beach for oceanography and ornithology. From Charlotte she moved to Asheboro to complete an internship in several animal habitats at the zoo. Leaving her home state, she fulfilled her dream of living at the beach and working with animals by working at the Jacksonville Zoo as a bird and primate keeper. In Asheville she loves the turn of the seasons, walking downtown, bird watching, and enjoying the cafes downtown with her husband. She is pictured here with Dakota.

Jamie, C.V.T.

Jamie is an Asheville native who attended Warren Wilson College and is a recent graduate of the Veterinary Medical Technology program at Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College. He has worked at Animal Hospital South and Animal Hospital East for several years. He has a keen interest in black bear wildlife biology and is looking forward to attending veterinary school with this interest concentration in mind.

Matt

Matt has lived in Asheville almost his entire life. He has loved animals since he was a child and is always excited to be working at Animal Hospital East and South. Matt graduated from Appalachian State University with a B.S. in biology. Matt plans to continue his education attending Tuskegee College of Veterinary Medicine. Long study times are ahead for Gizmo (pictured here).

Sarah

Sarah is a wonderful addition to our Asheville community. Prior to moving to Asheville, she completed her BFA in Dance Choreography and Performance from Columbia College in 2003. She was then employed as a veterinary technician in an emergency hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. She is delighted to have joined the patient care team at Animal Hospital South and Animal Hospital East. She is the proud companion to Claire Agnes (pictured), Delilah Jane, and Des Saussure "Bittle" Brown Dog with whom she shares her Weaverville home. She has to keep her house well supplied with dog food!

Marlaina, C.V.T.

Born in Mississippi and growing up in New Orleans, Marlaina has made it a goal to one day run her own veterinary practice. In the meantime, she has successfully completed her degree from the Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College veterinary technology program. She enjoys softball, camping, and brings a calm and compassionate perspective to her daily work. She is pictured here with Roxy.

Practice Managers

Mindy

Mindy has lived in North Carolina all of her life. She has worked for Animal Hospital East and Animal Hospital South since she was sixteen years of age. Mindy shares her home with three dogs - Hershey, Kilmer, BB, and one fish. Mindy can answer any question you might have concerning patient or client care. Mindy enjoys shopping and spending time with her husband Ross, family and friends.

Office Managers

Tiffany

Tiffany moved to the Mills River area from Virginia Beach, Virginia with her companion lhasa apso, Weber. She grew up in Virginia Beach and attended a vocation technical school, receiving certification as a licensed practical nurse in 1998. She then worked as an office manager for a Disabled Veterans Tidewater Store for nine years. She transitioned easily to the veterinary medicine world, and she is very proud to be a member of the Animal Hospital East and Animal Hospital South client care team.

Client Care

Amy

Amy is a long time staff member who has been with Animal Hospital East for greater than twenty years. Amy is married to Bill and has a son William and a daughter Peyton. She enjoys her 2 dogs, Buck and Wynni. She also enjoys reading, photography, and spending time with her family. She is pictured here with Wynni, who is 18 years old.

Natalie

Born and raised in Asheville, Natalie attends N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine since completing a degree at UNC Asheville in biology. She and her family own multiple cats, dogs, horses, and one lone goat. She is involved with several animal rescue organizations and has rescued and found homes for over 60 cats and kittens. In her spare time she likes to dance and compete in horseback riding.

Star

Star has been with the hospital more than ten years and becomes more entertaining every year. She keeps everyone organized and laughing. She is an advocate for your pet and sincerely works to create an excellent patient visit. She shares her home with her family and her aging yellow lab, Jade.

Polly

Polly grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina and moved to Asheville several years ago. Polly graduated from Western Carolina University with a B.S. degree in mathematics. Polly teaches high school as well as work at Animal Hospital East and Animal Hospital South on her weekends and days off. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and traveling, and scrapbooking and photography. She enjoys spending time with her two feline friends, Nellie and Toby Theodore (pictured). The kitties love to play when she is grading papers!

Lori C.

Lori is a graduate of Western Carolina University where she earned her BSBA in marketing. She enjoys the front desk because she loves meeting people and their pets. Lori resides in east Asheville with her husband and two teenage children. They share their home with two birds, six chickens, and three dogs, Moose, Molly, and Godiva. Moose, appropriately named, is picture here.
